Why Steel Outperforms Other Materials for Fire Exit Doors

17 Jun, 2026

Currently, fire emergency exit doors on the market are mainly made of three materials: wood, glass fiber and steel. With long-term fire safety practice and standard upgrading, steel fire exit doors have gradually become the mainstream choice for most public and industrial buildings, thanks to their unique material advantages unmatched by other alternatives.

First of all, steel materials feature zero flammability and stable high-temperature resistance. Wooden fire doors, even filled with fireproof materials, will still carbonize and deform rapidly under long-term high temperature. Their fire resistance duration is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, and wood combustion will release extra toxic smoke. Glass fiber reinforced plastic doors are light in weight but prone to thermal expansion and cracking in fierce fires, losing smoke insulation effects quickly. Steel, however, will not burn or release harmful gas. It maintains stable hardness and overall structure at temperatures above 1000℃, supporting long-time fire isolation.

Secondly, steel fire exit doors have outstanding durability and low maintenance cost. Building emergency passages have large pedestrian flow all year round, and exit doors are frequently opened and closed every day. Wooden doors are easy to wear, warp and loosen after long-term use, while fiberglass doors are fragile against hard impact. High-strength cold-rolled steel plates have strong impact resistance, scratch resistance and deformation resistance. A qualified steel fire exit door can serve more than 15 years without overall replacement, greatly reducing later maintenance and replacement costs for building operators.

Thirdly, steel doors support diversified functional matching while ensuring safety. Manufacturers can install automatic door closers, fire smoke sealing strips, emergency push bars and fire alarm linkage devices on steel doors freely. When a fire alarm is triggered, the normally open steel fire exit door can automatically close to isolate fire sources automatically. Such integrated intelligent matching cannot be realized stably on wooden or composite fire doors.

Although steel fire exit doors have slightly higher initial installation cost, their superior fire resistance, durability and compatible functions make them the most cost-effective option in the long run. For public buildings with dense crowds, choosing steel fire emergency exit doors is a reliable investment for long-term public safety.
